How to play Whodunnit, a free murder mystery logic game

Whodunnit is a free online whodunit game you play in your browser on a phone or computer. Each case is a small murder mystery: a handful of stick-figure suspects, a set of rooms and a set of items. Your job is to work out who was in which room with which item, and then who did it, using logic alone. There is nothing to download and you can start without an account.

The rules

  1. Read the clues. Each clue rules something in or out, such as "the person in the library was not holding the rope".
  2. Fill in your notebook. The notebook is a logic grid. Mark ✓ for what must be true and ✗ for what can't be.
  3. Name the culprit. When only one suspect fits every clue, accuse them.

Every case has exactly one answer that can be found by deduction, without guessing.

Daily case, levels and leaderboard

A new daily murder mystery arrives every day and is the same for every player. It starts easy on Monday and gets harder towards Sunday. Solve it each day to build a streak. Beyond the daily case there are chapters of levels: early cases teach the basics, later ones add more suspects, alibis with times, leads you choose to follow, and suspects who lie. Sign in to save your progress, earn detective ranks and climb the global leaderboard.

Who is it for?

Anyone who likes logic puzzles, detective stories, Cluedo-style deduction or logic-grid puzzles. A case takes a few minutes, so it fits into a coffee break.

Tips for new detectives

Questions players ask

Is this murder mystery game free?

Yes. Whodunnit is a free murder mystery game with no ads, no payments and no download. It runs in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer.

What kind of puzzle is it?

Each case is a logic grid puzzle, also called a zebra puzzle or Einstein puzzle, dressed up as a crime. You use deductive reasoning to solve the crime: who did it, with what weapon, and in which room.

Is it like Cluedo, Clue or Murdle?

It is a whodunit in the same spirit as the board game Clue (Cluedo) and the Murdle puzzle books, but every case is a fresh pure-logic puzzle with no dice and no luck. If you enjoy games like Murdle, daily brain teasers or detective puzzles, you will feel at home.

Is there a daily mystery puzzle?

Yes. A new daily mystery case appears every day, the same for every player, so you can compare times with friends and keep a streak going.

Is it good for kids, teens and adults?

The crimes are cartoon stick-figure mysteries with no gore, so the game suits teens and adults, and older kids who like logic puzzles. Early cases teach the rules step by step.

Can I play it in class or as a brain training game?

Yes. A case takes a few minutes and exercises critical thinking and logical reasoning, which makes it a handy brain game for a break, a classroom warm-up or a mystery night.
